When God blesses us with a comfortable season of life, it is easy to enjoy our gifts and slowly drift away from him who has provided everything. Comfort kills spirituallity if we are not cautious. When difficulties are present, we run to God. We pray, we fast, and we feverishly long for God’s presence and comforting hand in our lives. And when God answers our prayers, we might be thankful to him, but we reward him with a heart that slowly drifts away. When life is good, we feel less need for prayer or fasting, and we might not even attend church anymore.
Comfort can be dangerous, and can weaken our faith. If we chose comfort over studying, we would fail our exams. If we chose the comfort of our couch over working out, we would lose our health. If we chose the comfort of our direct circle, we would lose out on new friendships and new opportunities to spread the Word. In no circumstance does comfort have a positive effect on our lives, but usually always leads to unfavorable circumstances.
Comfort in our relationship with God can be the most dangerous of all. Jesus called upon us to live an action packed life. To preach, to help, to give, and to “fight the good fight” Timothy 6:12. Our instructions are never to relax, be merry and comfortable, but rather to suffer and carry our cross, daily. A true Christian life calls for action, not idleness.
Because of laziness the building decays, And through idleness of hands the house leaks. Ecclesiastes 10:18.
The message is simple – idleness, inactiveness, and comfort will cause decay in our relationship with God, and leaking in our faith. So let’s avoid this danger, and accompany our faith with deeds because “just like the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.” James 2:26.
