Now the Lord had said unto Abram, Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy father’s house, unto a land that I will show thee (Genesis 12:1)
Abraham was called by the Lord to leave his land and his family to journey to a strange country. As uncomfortable and difficult as that might have been, Abraham left without hesitation, fully trusting in the Lord. Sometimes it is God’s will and our lot to be unsettled, and obligated to move our habitation, and our work, while leaving family and friends behind.
Many of our fathers and the saints traveled, such as the Israelites from Egypt fleeing from oppression; and some traveled because they were sent on missions, such as Saint Paul. King David had his fair share of journeys as well; and at times was forced to flee his habitation seeking safety.
All of us must look upon ourselves as strangers and sojourners in this world, and by faith travel according to God’s will. While we are here in this present state, we must be aware that we are pilgrims on this earth, seeking the citizenship which is in heaven first.
Yet while on this earth, no place nor condition of life can shut us out from the comfort that the Lord gives us. Abraham met with God even while he was among the Canaanites far away from his land. War, persecution, circumstances and even enemies may part us and our homes, us and our altars and churches, but not us and our God.
If we have a journey ahead, let us pray:
Lord Jesus Christ my God, be my Companion, guide and protector during my journey. Keep me from all danger, misfortune and temptation. By Your divine power grant me a peaceful and successful journey and safe arrival. In You I place my hope and trust and You I praise, honor and glorify, together with Your Father and Holy Spirit now and forever and ever. Amen
